JG 6 was a brief-lived unit, formed in the late summer of 1944 out of the rest from Zerstörergeschwader 26.
It first saw action on the Western Front, and took part in "Operation Bodenplatte" but was withdrawn to the East after repeatedly suffering heavy losses.
Starved of fuel and forced to move many times to avoid the Russian advance, what was left of the unit retreated to the Prague area, several pilots flying West at the end of the war to avoid capture by Soviet forces.

Reichsverteidigung
In the final stages of the war, when the Luftwaffe was already forced to move back to the Reich, the units were reorganized.
Now a Gruppe contained 4 Staffeln.

Units which had the order to protect the homeland ("Reich"), received a fuselage band.
Other than before, these were now not a marking for a special place or theatre, but a recognizing help for each unit, and each had its own colors for the band.
