General Information
иап (IAP)'s were Fighter Regiments.
From 1941, an IAP was comprised of 3 squadrons, normally 40 a/c.
Each squadron was divided into flights or 'zveno.' During Barbarossa zveno referred to tight defensive formations of 3 or 4 planes.
Gv.IAP's were Guardian Fighter Regiments.
A regiment could receive recognition for courage and achievement and be designated "gvardeiskii" (guards) .
In 1943 Divisions and Corps could be so entitled.
Many guards units used the guards insignea, but not all!

Fighter Aviation Division (IAD)
A Fighter Aviation Division (IAD) consisted of 3 fighter regiments.
120 a/c +  (4 ?!)  replacement airframes.

(example: Yak1 'White58' of 270.IAP,203 IAD, 2nd Ukranian Front , 11/43)
Aviation Army Corp (IAK)
Until May '42 an Aviation Army Corp (IAK) was comprised of 2 or 3 IAD's.
(just add XXX IAK behind the IAP & IAD)
VA
In May of '42 this changed with the formation of independent air armies (VA's) comprised of 5 or more Fighter Aviation Divisions.
(IAD's) usually subordinated to front line commanders.
18 Air Armies (VA's) were formed between 42 + 44.
Formed to ensure improved coordination of the avation divisions, previously under the Front Air Forces or the 16 Army Air Forces.
VA's consisted of fighter, bomber, ground attack and long range divisions.
By 1944 an air army could have over 1000 aircraft - fighters, bombers, ground attack, and recon divisions.
IA PVO
Also in early '42 some 40 fighter regiments were given to the IA PVO - a new air arm for defence duties.
By 1945 almost 100 fighter regiments were in the IA PVO.

(example: Mig3 'Black7" of 6.IAP,6IAK PVO, Moscow Winter '41-'42.)

HSU
Hero of the Soviet Union
Awarded to 895 pilots in the GP (Great Patriotic -WW2) War.
26 got it twice,

and 2:

Kozhedub (leading allied ace WW2 - 62 victories) and
Pokryshkin (59 victories)

received three.

(It is unclear what parameters were used to award the HSU)
Holders of the HSU could have the five pointed gold star painted on the tail of their aircraft.

Can also be seen on many profiles on a variety of places on the fuselage.
