The 1st Brazilian Fighter Group (1°GavCa) , an expeditionary unit, was
created by a presidential decree on December 18, 1943. Major Nero Moura was appointed as commander and 32 pilots were selected among the volunteers. After receiving flight instructions in P-40 aircraft at the Air Base of Aguadulce (Panama), the Group completed its training piloting P-47s at Suffolk, Long Island (USA). The Fighter Group disembarked at Livorno, Italy, on October 6, 1944
proceeding to the Tarquinia Air Base. War operations began on October 31, 1944, as a fighter-bomber unit. |
