After Sicily the squadron supported the Fifth Army's invasion of Italy with reconnaissance and naval gunfire spotting.
It pioneered spotting for the long range field artillery.

1944, April   -   North American P-51C MUSTANG   -   France

In April 1944, the squadron replaced its old P-51s with new P-51Cs.
In August 1944, the 111th squadron supported the Seventh Army's invasion of Southern France and followed that army into Northern France.
The squadron was in Nuremberg, Germany when World War II ended, and was assigned to the Occupation Air Force.
In 23 months of combat flying, the 111th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron flew 7,284 combat sorties,
supporting four invasions and participating in a fifth.
Squadron pilots shot down 43 enemy aircraft while supporting the ground armies with reconnaissance and long range artillery spotting.
The squadron received the Distinguished Unit Citation for combat in February 1945.

1st Brazilian Fighter Group (1° GavCa)

The 1st Brazilian Fighter Group (1°GavCa) , an expeditionary unit, was created by a presidential decree on December 18, 1943.
Major Nero Moura was appointed as commander and 32 pilots were selected among the volunteers.
After receiving flight instructions in P-40 aircraft at the Air Base of Aguadulce (Panama),
the Group completed its training piloting P-47s at Suffolk, Long Island (USA).

The Fighter Group disembarked at Livorno, Italy, on October 6, 1944 proceeding to the Tarquinia Air Base.
They were attached to the American "350th Fighter Group" and designated the "1st Brazilian Fighter Squadron", the fourth squadron of the unit.
On November 21, 1944, the 1st GAvCA together with 350th FG was moved 125 miles north to San Giusto Airfield at Pisa.

War operations began on October 31, 1944, as a fighter-bomber unit.
The 1°GavCa began its operations having 26 P-47D airplanes.
Later on 24 more were received.

111th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron

In April 1944, the squadron replaced its old P-51s with new P-51Cs.
In August 1944, the 111th squadron supported the Seventh Army's invasion of Southern France and followed that army into Northern France.
The squadron was in Nuremberg, Germany when World War II ended, and was assigned to the Occupation Air Force.
In 23 months of combat flying, the 111th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron flew 7,284 combat sorties,
supporting four invasions and participating in a fifth.
Squadron pilots shot down 43 enemy aircraft while supporting the ground armies with reconnaissance and long range artillery spotting.
The squadron received the Distinguished Unit Citation for combat in February 1945.
