 302. Kokutai
(D- )

"Tatsumaki" Unit
Japan, Yokosuka AB

Air Group 302 was established March of 1944 at Kisarazu
It was an Air Defense unit assigned to the Yokosuka Naval Base for protecting the Japanese capital.
Training of the Raiden unit took place at Yokosuka and used a corner of the headquarters of the "Yokosuka Air Group" .
The unit was later transferred to Atsugi base. And later half of its force to Kyushu.
(It appears that only a part of the 302 Group shared a portion of the same base as Yokosuka Air Group at one time but they are separate groups)

AG302 was the fourth air group established at Yokosuka, and hence "Yo-D" tail code was allocated as a TEMPORARY tail code.

It's interesting that this "temporary" tail code was used until the end of the war
(yellow 'dots' are killmarkings)

This Kokutai was established under and belonged to Yokosuka Navy District.
It`s HQ and main force was always stationed at Atsugi.
However, from time to time, they sent a small detached group temporarily to other Naval Air Stations for support.
What was sent to  Kanoya Air Base, Kagoshima, Kyushu was called "Kanoya-Bunkentai",
but it originally flew from Atsugi and returned to its HQ finally.

commanded by Captain Minoru Genda, the mastermind behind the raid on Pearl Harbor.
