Kasumigaura Kokutai(
Kasumigaura was evtl a private flying school which contracted to
the Japanese Navy and essentially owned obsolete types such as early
A6M2s and A5Ms. Perhaps Kasumigaura did something completely different
(light blue, for all we might know) to suit their needs. As I say, Some think that Kasumigaura was a private school which trained pilots before the war, and was pressed into action to help train pilots during the war. If true, perhaps their payment, partially, was to receive obsolete planes. Minoru Akimoto described Kasumigaura Kokutai: "On November 1, 1922, an air group was organized by abolishing the Rinji Kaigun Koku-jutsu Koshubu [Temporary Naval Aeronautics Institute]...." |

Tainan Kokutai(
This Fighter Operational Training Unit was stationed at the Tainan
Airbase, Formosa (Taiwan) from 1943 or 1944 onwards. There is no relation between the famous first Tainan Kokutai with codes (V-..) / (UI- ) of the famous pilots Shingo and Sakai and this new formed unit. When this unit was formed, the original had been renamed to 251 Kokutai already. |
